When Illustrations are the Best Choice

• It’s difficult for even the best illustrations to show all the detail found in most photographs. And that’s a good thing. The problem with photos is often that they show too much detail, making it difficult to see the features that are most important. By simplifying the objects they depict, illustrations make things much clearer.

When showing the details is important, consider using an illustration instead.

Similarly, it can be difficult for a photograph to clearly show the operation of an object, as might be needed in an owner’s manual or textbook. Illustrations excel at this. In fact, a simple illustration can often describe something that several long-winded paragraphs cannot make clear. It is generally faster and easier to create a humorous drawing than it is to stage an equally clear humorous photo.

Illustrations are also good at emphasizing danger or warning.

In our experience, the only reason more companies don’t make greater use of high quality illustrations is that they don’t know how easy it is for use to provide them.
